Sharing session: Can village access climate finance?

The answer is Yes! Yayasan Komunitas Penjaga Pulau in collaboration with Yayasan Rumah Energi and Forestry Department of University of Mataram conducted an online sharing session on how village-level organisation can access climate finance. The session focused on three potential mechanisms: (i) Ecological Fiscal Transfer, (ii) Carbon Credits, and (iii) Funds from Indonesian Environment Fund (BPDLH). Among the three mechanisms, the funds from BPDLH is the most feasible for non-governmental organisation at village level. Ecological Fiscal Transfer is a government to government scheme, hence it can be delivered through BUMDes. Carbon credits is feasible but requires big ‘transaction’ fees and large areas as well as tenure security for years (at least 20 years).

From the training, developing village level cooperative was one of the venues to enable village-level organisation to tap into climate finance. Hence, as part of the AF-EU-UNDP AFCIA 2nd stage project, we established a cooperative involving 7 coastal villages in Sumbawa. The cooperative is called: “Koperasi Tumbuh Bersama Utan”.
